At the recent Batchelor Institute graduation ceremony at the Desert People’s Centre Campus in Alice Springs we celebrated the 100th person to graduate from the Preparation for Tertiary Success (PTS) course.

One of the PTS graduates gave a response on behalf of all the students who graduated. Nerida Riley (Alice Springs NT) said: “Batchelor has provided us with the opportunity to pursue our goals so that we can realise our potential to create better futures for ourselves. For us this is a chance to become future leaders academically, and also to be role models for our people from all over Australia. Thanks to all the support staff and lecturers here at the Desert Peoples Centre for being the first point for helping us with our studies. Without all the support and services we wouldn’t be here graduating today.”

Michael Roberts travelled from Adelaide to attend the graduation ceremony in Alice Springs. Michael said: “PTS is a great course. The teachers are amazing and you get to meet people from all over Australia and spend time in the centre of Australia – Alice Springs. Give it a go highly recommend.”

Once students complete the PTS course they are eligible to apply for a range of Higher Education courses at universities throughout Australia.

Many students elect to continue their studies with Batchelor Institute through our partnership with Charles Darwin University.

Richie Kennedy (Echuca VIC) and Shirley Turner (Sandy Bore NT) who also graduated last week, are currently enrolled in the Diploma of Creative and Indigenous Writing.

Richie said: “I am really enjoying my classes and Sam (lecturer) is a great bloke. It’s challenging at times but I am on top of things. There are a lot of essays, but the PTS classes have really helped me to be prepared for Uni because when I get some assessments I already know what they are after.”

Graduates of the course are currently studying at universities throughout Australia including Charles Darwin University (NT), Flinders University (SA), James Cook University & Griffith University (QLD), University of Newcastle & University of Western Sydney (NSW), Australian Catholic University (Vic) and Murdoch University (WA).

Andrea Sam (Cairns QLD) was unable to attend the ceremony but she sent this message on Facebook “A very big thank you to those who stuck by me and supported me through my learning journey and a special one to my lecturers who made an effort to give me advice, support and encourage me to be successful.”

All Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people who are 18 years or older are eligible to apply. The PTS course is most suitable for people who have completed at least Year 10 at school or a Certificate III qualification.

Students travel from every state and territory, including the Torres Strait Islands, to attend face-to-face workshops in Alice Springs or Darwin followed by work to be completed at home. Travel and accommodation is arranged for students who don’t live in Alice Springs or Darwin.
