This year for the first time Batchelor Institute have worked alongside the Army to deliver not one but two Army Indigenous Development Programs. In July, we were able to graduate 31 trainees and with our latest Graduation ceremony last week, we celebrated the success of 15 more trainees who will add to the growing ranks of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders within the Australian Army.
These trainees, who have spent the last five months at Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education, are heading straight into the Army Recruit Training Centre at Kapooka for Initial Enlistment Training before a short break over Christmas to spend time with their families.
The AIDP program is run in partnership with Batchelor Institute and the Australian Army and is successfully increasing the representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the defence forces.
In the past five years almost 100 men and women have graduated from Batchelor Institute from one of these programs.
This award-winning collaboration is celebrated for its cross-cultural competency and strong track record in preparing graduates for future training within Defence services.
At the graduation ceremony on December 8th, the proud trainees marched in to be presented with certificates of completion by Brigadier Neil Sweeney and academic awards from Batchelor Institute.
Congratulatory speeches were given by Brigadier Neil Sweeney and the Hon Vicki O’Halloran AM applauding the hard work and dedication of the graduates.
Dr Stephen Hagan, Director of Alliance Management at Batchelor Institute then gave the chief civilian speech and spoke of his personal journey from living in the outskirts of the small South-East Queensland town of Cunnamulla to to achieving a Phd and authoring several books. Dr Hagan encouraged the Indigenous graduates to continue on their own journey to realise their dreams.
These men and women have been away from home and loved ones for over 15 weeks. They have been an inspiration to their teachers and mentors and to hundreds of other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students on campus.
Last year Batchelor Institute and the Department Defence won the award for Northern Territory Training Award for Industry Collaboration of the Year. This year Batchelor was humbled to receive the National Employee Award for Army Reservist. We look forward to many future years of collaboration with the Department of Defence and successes for our graduates.
Congratulations to all the AIDP trainees!
