Acknowledgement of country

Batchelor Institute would like to acknowledge and pay respect to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sovereign people of the lands on which our campuses are located. As we share our knowledge, teaching and learning and engage in research practices within this Institution and/or conduct business with a variety of external agencies and organisations, we must always pay respect to the sovereign status of our hosts. May their Ancestors always be remembered and honoured, their Elders listened to and respected, all members treated with dignity and fairness — in the present and well into the future.

We also acknowledge and pay respect to the knowledge embedded forever with our hosts, custodianship of country and the binding relationship they have with the land. Batchelor Institute extends this acknowledgment and expression of respect to all sovereign custodians — past, present and emerging. By expressing Acknowledgement of Country we encourage all to extend and practice respect to all First Nations people wherever their lands are located.

Keith’s Story: From Ngukurr to Graduation at Batchelor Institute

Keith Rogers, from Ngukurr in south-east Arnhem Land, recently graduated from Batchelor Institute with a BSB20120 Certificate II in Workplace Skills. His graduation marks a significant achievement in his professional and personal life, as he builds the skills needed to continue contributing to his community.

Keith’s Experience

Keith enrolled in the BSB20120 Certificate II in Workplace Skills, which prepares students for a variety of entry-level roles in business services. This course is especially useful for individuals who are developing the necessary skills to enter the workforce for the first time or who want to build foundational abilities in administrative and operational tasks. Students in this course learn how to carry out basic clerical duties, manage time, and work effectively with others in a business environment.

Reflecting on his time at Batchelor, Keith shared, "You learn about computers, like if you want to build up a workplace team and in planning, planning in the workplace." The skills Keith gained through the course will assist him as he continues working in his current role and beyond.

About the BSB20120 Certificate II in Workplace Skills

This qualification is ideal for those who are either entering the workforce or developing skills in preparation for future employment. It teaches basic procedural, clerical, and administrative tasks, with a focus on self-management and using technology in the workplace. Students perform a variety of routine tasks under direct supervision, providing them with the skills needed to start their career in business services.

BSB20120 Certificate II in Workplace Skills, provides a strong foundation for future roles in office administration and other business services environments. It also opens pathways to higher qualifications, students should have basic literacy and numeracy skills, and Batchelor Institute provides support for those who may need additional help in these areas.

Batchelor Institute may be able to assist with travel, accommodation, and meals during compulsory workshops.

Keith’s Plan for the Future

Keith is already applying his new skills in his job as the local radio announcer in Ngukurr for Roper Gulf Shire. He plans to use his platform to encourage others in his community to take advantage of the opportunities at Batchelor Institute. "My plan is to go back, announce it on the radio, and tell people maybe to develop skills in other things, come and train in Batchelor. Fill your skills up and you'll find that you can achieve these goals," he says.

Support for Indigenous Students

As with many Indigenous students, Keith, was supported to attend the face-to-face workshops while living in his home community.  as well as being supported with travel, meals, and accommodation for the required workshop periods at Batchelor Campus.

Keith’s Impact

Keith’s dedication to improving his skills is a powerful example for others in Ngukurr. By completing theBSB20120 Certificate II in Workplace Skills, he is now better equipped to succeed in his current role and to inspire others to pursue further education and training.
