Werte! (hello!)
In November 2024, Batchelor Institute’s Centre for Australian Languages and Linguistics (CALL) along with the NT DET linguist and Language Centre and Amoonguna School contributed to an Arrernte Schools Workshop to support Alcoota elders and school staff to get their language program going again for the first time in many years.
The CALL team introduced ‘Daytime, Nighttime’, a story book and animation from their Talking Tracks project. They demonstrated and worked with the young school staff to learn about story-based language teaching. This model encourages using stories to develop student’s oral language.
The workshop also worked with the elders to capture important cultural knowledge and produce learning resources including:
- a wordlist around the Seasons theme
- a song about the night to the tune of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
- an interactive digital poster featuring night animals
The Alice Springs Language Centre and Amoonguna School teams demonstrated and workshopped some innovative teaching approaches including Blooket digital learning games and outdoor language learning games.
A key focus of the workshop was mentoring the young Arrernte educators through hands-on experiences and collaborative learning. Essential also was that it was young and older First Nations educators who provided most of the hands-on support.
Batchelor Institute looks forward to continuing this support for Arrernte language and education and playing a part in collaborations such as this during 2025.
Urreke aretyenhenge! (A warm farewell in Arrernte)
