Acknowledgement of country

Batchelor Institute would like to acknowledge and pay respect to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sovereign people of the lands on which our campuses are located. As we share our knowledge, teaching and learning and engage in research practices within this Institution and/or conduct business with a variety of external agencies and organisations, we must always pay respect to the sovereign status of our hosts. May their Ancestors always be remembered and honoured, their Elders listened to and respected, all members treated with dignity and fairness — in the present and well into the future.

We also acknowledge and pay respect to the knowledge embedded forever with our hosts, custodianship of country and the binding relationship they have with the land. Batchelor Institute extends this acknowledgment and expression of respect to all sovereign custodians — past, present and emerging. By expressing Acknowledgement of Country we encourage all to extend and practice respect to all First Nations people wherever their lands are located.

2 minute read
Dr Rosalie Kunoth-Monks OAM

Dr Rosalie Kunoth-Monks OAM, who sadly passed away on 26 January 2022 at the age of 85, will be honoured in a state funeral commencing at 10am ACST on 3 March 2022 at the Desert Knowledge Precinct in Alice Springs (Mparntwe).

The highly esteemed Dr Kunoth-Monks, an Arrernte, Amatjere and Alyawarre woman, is deeply missed by many. She leaves behind a legacy of advocating and campaigning tirelessly throughout her life for the welfare, recognition and advancement of First Nations peoples.

Dr Kunoth-Monks is remembered for her long and lasting involvement with Batchelor Institute, where she was an inspiring leader who encouraged both students and staff toward meaningful pathways for employment, further study opportunities and community leadership.

Batchelor Institute is honoured to be able to provide a space for the funeral service at its Desert People’s Centre campus within the Desert Knowledge Precinct, located just outside the town centre of Mparntwe, on Arrernte Country.

The state funeral will take place in line with current COVID-19 protocols. Due to the limitations on attendance numbers, those who are not able to attend in person are invited to view the livestream of the event via Zoom. The link will be available from the previous day for all those wishing to check their connection in advance.

Once again, our sincere condolences to the Kunoth-Monks family.
