Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education (the Institute) is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Statement contains the Institute’s policies for responsible management of all personal information it collects. It is part of the procedures put in place by the Institute, which aim to protect the privacy of your personal information in accordance with the Information Privacy Principles (IPPs) set out in the Information Act (NT) (the Act).

- To guide staff in the responsible collection and handling of personal information by the Institute.
- To give individuals the right to access information about them that is held by the Institute and to correct any errors in that information.
- To establish a complaints procedure for investigation and rectification of breaches of the Act.
The Institute collects the personal information that it needs to carry out its functions and activities, including its statutory functions.
The Institute may also collect statistical information to assist us and government bodies to provide the most appropriate educational courses and facilities to students. Once this kind of information is collected, it will be de-identified so that any compilation or publication of those statistics will not reveal your identity.
The Institute may collect your personal information in a number of ways, including:
- directly from you in documents such as enrolment or application forms, via the student identification card system or by verbal or written correspondence; and
- from third parties such as other educational institutions or government bodies.
The Institute may use your personal information in a number of ways, including:
- to carry out the Institute’s functions and activities;
- to provide information about the Institute’s courses and facilities to students or prospective students;
- to provide educational services and to determine and provide appropriate support services and facilities to students;
- to administer and manage processes such as admission, enrolment, scholarships, accommodation, billing and collection of fees and charges, examinations and academic standing;
- to administer and maintain information technology services and facilities for the Institute.
The Institute will take reasonable steps to ensure that your personal information is not disclosed to third parties except in certain circumstances, including where:
- you have consented to the release;
- the release of the information is a condition of your sponsorship or enrolment;
- the Institute is authorised or required by law or regulatory requirements to disclose the information to, for example, the Australian Taxation Office or Centrelink;
- the information is provided to a third party which provides services to the Institute, in which case the Institute will endeavour to ensure that the service provider agrees to preserve the confidentiality of your personal information;
- the circumstances where the Institute is not prohibited from disclosing the information, as described in the Act.
The Institute will take reasonable steps to protect the personal information it holds from misuse and loss and from unauthorised access, modification or disclosure.
Your personal information is generally stored in a secure place in the Institute faculty or department that uses that information. Your personal information may also be stored by the Institute in electronic form, which is protected from unauthorised access by a password system. Institute staff have access to your personal information only to the extent that is required for them to carry out their duties.
The Institute has in place a system to manage its records so that personal information is destroyed or permanently de-identified once it is no longer needed.
If you make a written request to us for access to the personal information the Institute holds about you, the Institute will provide you with access to that information, unless there is an applicable exception under the IPPs.
We may charge you a reasonable fee for providing you with access to the information.
The Institute wishes to ensure that the personal information it collects uses, or discloses is, and remains accurate, complete and up to date. If you think that your personal information retained by the Institute requires changing or updating, please contact your faculty or the Privacy Officer.
