Who are we

Batchelor Institute is the only First Nations dual sector tertiary education provider in Australia. The Institute gives precedence to its philosophy of Both Ways: positioning First Nations peoples as knowledge holders in all educational transactions with Western knowledge systems as well as privileging First Nations ways of learning and teaching to underpin our engagement with mainstream education systems and society more broadly.

Batchelor Institute is a Registered Training Organisation with the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) to deliver vocational education and training (VET) programs. It has three main campuses, at the Batchelor township, the Desert Knowledge Precinct in Alice Springs, and the Casuarina campus of Charles Darwin University. In addition, it operates a range of learning centres across rural and remote Northern Territory. Batchelor Institute is an eligible higher education provider per the Higher Education Support Act (2003) and is accredited by the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) to deliver postgraduate higher education.
History
Batchelor Institute began in the late 1960s as a small annexe of Kormilda College, providing programs for Aboriginal teacher aides and assistants in community schools. In 1974 Batchelor Institute moved to the Batchelor township. In 1982 the Institute commenced as a dual sector tertiary provider and since the 1980s has continuously built a focus on learning that is supportive of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.
Indigenous Learning
Indigenous students come to Batchelor Institute as part of their life’s learning journey. They bring with them their own knowledge, language/s and culture and come as adults with previous life and education experience. They journey with Batchelor Institute and continue to journey with their home community and family, at the same time.
Community
Batchelor Institute recognises and respects the diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander First Nation Peoples from across Australia. The Institute values the diverse skills and knowledges including cultural knowledges that students and all staff bring to the Institute. All students and staff commit to a code of conduct. These rights and responsibilities ensure Batchelor Institute is a welcoming, safe, and supportive space for everyone.

Batchelor Institute is known for offering a culturally safe research training environment and for advancing the aspirations of many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples across Australia. Our Graduate School is focused on providing research candidates with a unique experience that reflects a robust Indigenous approach to advanced learning and research practice.
Student travel & accommodation
Your travel to and from workshops will be arranged by the Institute once you are enrolled in your course. Your travel from and to your home location, meals and accommodation are covered for the duration of the workshop for eligible students.
